Review on Mrs. Funnybones

One of the very few books which made me laugh out so hard after such a long period of time.

Mrs. Funnybones is narrated by the author herself, Twinkle Khanna. In the book she narrated her day to day interactions with her mother, husband, son along with the newborn. She also described her personal household chores, her pov towards her roles as a wife, mother a daughter in law along with her professional life of a fashion designer and an interior designer adding spiced up with some sprinkle of joy, fun & sarcasm. She has tried to portray everything about life in a fun mode but secretly measuring every small detail of life.

One of the most funny interactions was with her mother. She has shared some of her childhood events which has big impacts on her mind still now . Her ability to rhyme with words to describe any event is also very much impressive in the book,

Addressing in a very powerful and respectful manner is something I found very much amazing in her book. She has addressed her husband as “The man of the house” , The staff at home as “The Domestic Wonder” her son as the “Prodigal son” and the new born as “The Baby”.

Chapters in the book are started with beautiful small tips like : “Nothing is free in life except bad advice” and named in ascending alphabetical order such as “C: Can Indian Men Control Anything except their Wives”.

Mother in Law is a topic where she has used a beautiful quote famous around the world as “......... and the devil could not be everywhere so she created mother in law.”

Once an aunt of mine who is also a mother of an only son also quoted as “ It’s good to have a mother in law better if she does not have any.“

But Twinkle also said a beautiful line as “ Do unto another as you would want the (future) other to do unto you.”

Twinkle has portrayed in this book the life of a middle aged woman who prefers comfort over fashion ,concern regarding female harassments, taboo regarding menstruation and proactive parenting, trying to teach the teenager the priority of staying alive above all and also to the hurdles or pains of a modern woman.

Some of my favourite quotes of this books are -

“ If you do know how to cook ,it is rather useful to pretend otherwise ,unless you want to be periodically nagged by snotty children to make their messy and time consuming favourite dishes right upto the day you get Alzheimer’s and luckily forget the recipe along with your name.”

“We always give our best when our back is against the wall. “

“The driven passionate ones give their best on ordinary days and that is why they are extraordinary”

“After fourteen years of matrimony, I have discovered that hping your other half telepathically reads your mind only leads to someone wanting to punch the other one in the face.”

“How can an 11- kilo baby need 85 kilos of things that would involve equations of relativity.. “

“Life is full of contradictions. We crave security and independence in equal measures.”

“Children are always learning from us. They don’t pay attention to most of the stuff we say , but are always watching what we do. “

“... we need to be empowered mothers so that we can lead the next generation of men and women into life of true equality.”

And with the last one I am ending this writeup is -

“ … That life is about accepting yourself. …….. No, remember , the only person YOu can ever change is yourself ;after you have done that and you are the best you that you can be , let go There is always another job, another woman ,another best friend. Each day that you persist in a situation where you are miserable is a day wasted on the path that would lead you to happiness. “
